Life Legacy

Esther Pool, 95, of Fresno, died Aug. 9. A lifelong homemaker and exceptional cook, she was inquisitive, honest and humble. She was preceded in death by her parents Jose T. and Josie Torres; husband, Herman Pool; son, Thomas; brothers, Santos Torres, Robert Torres and Ben Lubbon.

Esther was born in Needles, Calif., on Jan. 14, 1919 and moved to Fresno around age 4. She lived in Los Angeles during World War II and was a “Rosie the Riveter,” working at a defense plant in Burbank. She met her future husband, Army sergeant Herman Pool, at that time.

She spent the middle portion of her life as a homemaker in Henderson, Texas, where she raised four children. The oldest, Thomas John, was killed in action in Vietnam June 30, 1967. During those years, Esther honed her cooking skills and was CEO of the household. Whether she made fried chicken or enchilada casserole, her dishes were unforgettable. She also canned jams and jellies, and baked luscious cakes and pies.

A year after losing her husband on Nov. 9, 1976, Esther returned to Fresno where she lived out the last 37 years of her life.

She is survived by children: Michael, Richard and Maurine Pool and daughter-in-law, Gayle Bartos-Pool; sisters, Mary Dolores Moore and Audrey Kappitz; and many nieces and nephews.
