Dawna Ericksen
Mclelland
Jul 8, 1927 — Jan 25, 2025
Fresno
Dawna Ericksen Mclelland died on January 25, 2025. She was born on July 8, 1927, the daughter of Anna Eleda Nelson and Alma Danielsen Ericksen. At an early age, she moved with her family from her birthplace in Idaho Falls, Idaho, to Berkeley, California. There she received her undergraduate degree at the University of California at Berkeley and met her husband, William David McLelland. After their marriage they moved to Fresno in August of 1952, where they resided throughout their marriage. They enjoyed a long and happy marriage. It was marked by unity of purpose and blessed by wonderful children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and treasured friends.
After moving to Fresno, Dawna was hired as a case worker for the Fresno County Welfare Department. As their family grew, however, she chose to devote her time and energy to rearing the children, serving in volunteer activities, and providing support for her husband's responsibilities. As the children "left the nest", she entered the work force again as a member of the support staff in the Kremen School of Education and Human Development at California State University, Fresno. There, for a period of seventeen years, she enjoyed choice associations and the rewards of working within an education setting. Her beloved husband died in 2004. Caring for him during his long illness was a crucible that forged a stronger faith and helped her understand the purpose and value of trials. After her husband's death, she also found great satisfaction in continuing to serve in volunteer activities.
As an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, she credits her love of God and the Gospel of Jesus Christ for giving an eternal purpose and perspective to life. She felt that giving service to others was a critical element in that "purpose". She also felt it was not only a responsibility but also an important key to achieving happiness.
Dawna is survived by her children: Randy McLelland; Steve (Gail) McLelland, Jenelle (Jake) McGonigle; Tom (Karyn) McLelland; fourteen grandchildren and twenty-eight great-grandchildren.
