In Loving Memory of Demetrios Sokrates Mavrikis
April 15, 1940 – August 12, 2026
Demetrios Sokrates Mavrikis was born on April 15, 1940, in Skyros, Greece, to Anna and Sokrates Mavrikis. As a young boy, he would sit along the beach, looking out across the sea and dreaming of one day traveling the world and seeing all that lie beyond his island home. At the age of 15, his parents sent him to Athens to attend engineering school. At the end of the school year, with his dreams still calling him toward the open sea, Demetrios made the courageous decision to join the Merchant Marines. It was the beginning of a journey that would take him across the world and turn the dreams of a young boy from Skyros into reality. Through determination, perseverance, courage, and an unwavering work ethic, Demetrios built a remarkable life and legacy one that would span continents, generations, and countless lives touched along the way.
Demetrios worked for many years at Fruehauf as a maintenance worker and welder. Never one to settle, he continued his education and training while working, learning the electrical trade and air conditioning and heating repair. His dedication and ambition led him to earn his electrical contractor's license and eventually establishing his own side business, Demes Electric. His hands were always busy, improving, and providing for his family.
On April 5, 1969, Demetrios met the love of his life, Julieta. They married on August 23, 1969, and began building their life together in Fresno, California. Their marriage was blessed with two sons. On October 2, 1974, they welcomed their first child, George Demetrios Mavrikis, followed by their second son, Konstantino Demetrios Mavrikis, on September 27, 1977.
Demetrios and Julieta shared 56 years of marriage, building a family grounded in love, commitment, tradition, and faith in one another. Demetrios was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and family man. His greatest pride was not simply in what he accomplished through his work, but in the family he and Julieta built together.
He taught his sons lessons that extended far beyond the workplace. He taught them the value of hard work, pride, family, commitment, and tradition. Most importantly, he taught them that when you give someone your word, it carries weight and value. A handshake, a promise, and your word were things to be honored. He taught his family that arriving early means you are on time, and arriving on time means you are late, a simple lesson that reflected the discipline, respect, and responsibility by which he lived his life. These were lessons he lived by every day and passed down to his children and grandchildren.
Demetrios was a proud grandfather to seven grandchildren, four granddaughters and three grandsons. His grandchildren brought him immense joy and gave him another generation to love, guide, and teach. His legacy will live on through them and through the values he instilled in his entire family.
Demetrios was a man shaped by his Greek roots, his American dream, his strong work ethic, and, above all, his love for his family. He was a man who believed in doing things the right way, keeping his promises, standing by the people he loved, and never being afraid of hard work.
On Wednesday, August 12, 2026, Demetrios passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by his family.
He leaves behind a legacy of love, strength, hard work, family, tradition, and honor. Though he is no longer with us, the lessons he taught, the traditions he carried, and the love he gave will continue through his wife, his sons, his grandchildren, and every generation that follows.
His life was a testament to the American dream. His greatest accomplishment was his family.
May his memory be eternal.
