Fresno
James Rodney Swanson, age 93, of Fresno, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, May 11, 2025. Born in Kingsburg, California on November 23, 1931, to Bertil and Mamie Swanson, James was the eighth of nine children. He grew up on a family farm on the Kings River, surrounded by his large and loving family, and immersed in his Swedish heritage.
After graduating from Kingsburg High School in 1949, James attended Reedley College and Fresno State College, graduating in 1953 with a major in social studies. He met Patricia Prickett during his college years, and they married in June 1954. Together, they had two children, Deborah and Kenneth.
James dedicated his career to education, working for the Clovis Unified School District as a teacher, vice principal, and counselor. He earned a Masters Degree from Fresno State University in 1961 and continued to contribute to education during his retirement. James was a man of deep faith, actively involved in the life of the churches he attended, and was a mentor to many.
He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Patricia Swanson; his sister, Barbara Hansen; his children, Deborah Brazie and Kenneth Swanson; his grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and a large extended family. James was preceded in death by his parents and siblings.
A Celebration of Life will be held at First Presbyterian Church of Fresno on Saturday, June 14, at 11:00 a.m., followed by lunch. James will be remembered for his love of family, nature, and his unwavering faith.
