Mary Nell Walker died on August 3, 2023. Her passing was peaceful, with family by her side, at home in Caruthers, California. She's survived by David, her husband of 54 years, their children John and Lara, and three grandchildren, Vivian Walker, Hailey Main, and Hanna Main.

Mary was born in Bellflower, California on October 31, 1946, the youngest child and only daughter of Stanley and Hazel Carr, woodshop teacher and school secretary. Given her start, it's perhaps no surprise Mary devoted her life to education and the care of others. She began teaching high school biology in Southern California in 1969. When David returned to his hometown of Caruthers to farm, Mary paused her career to support him, start a family, and raise their children. For fifteen years, she attended every function at Alvina Elementary, presided over the PTA, and occasionally substitute taught. In 1994, Mary resumed her career at Riverdale High School, teaching biology and advising the Teachers of Tomorrow club until her retirement in 2009. Her former students and colleagues recall her warmly, as demanding as she was supportive, as encouraging as she was protective. "Mrs. Walker" saw the best in people.

Mary spent her retirement traveling and spending time with her grandchildren. She loved to scrapbook, handmake cards, and visit with friends old and new. She lived her life with wry smiles, a keen sense of humor, and endless patience. Mary will be dearly missed.

Viewing will be held on Tuesday, August 8th, 2023 at Page Funeral Chapel located at 2014 Arrants St. Selma, CA 93662 from 4 to 7 pm. In lieu of flowers, you can make a donation to the ALS Association in Mary's name to help find a cure for ALS.
