Obituary

Matthew Shawn Butler, of Fresno, California, died in Fresno, California on January 16, 2024, due to complications from a blood infection. He was 60 years old.

Born in Folsom, California on May 4, 1963, Matthew was raised in Fresno, California, and graduated from Bullard High School in 1981 before joining the U.S. Army at the age of 18. Mathew served as a military police officer in Germany and continued his service through the ROTC program while attending Fresno State University. Most of Matthew's career was in the banking industry. During his life he lived in Fresno, Los Angeles, Milpitas, Portland, Oregon and Cypress, Texas.

Matthew was a member of the Yurok Tribe of Northern California, and a fifth-generation member of the Lindgren family of Trinidad, California. Matthew had one son, Shawn, born in 1994.

Matthew will always be remembered for his sense of humor and his love of organized sports, especially baseball. A highlight of his life was the time he spent coaching Babe Ruth and Bullard High Freshman baseball. He was a loyal Dodgers fan to the end and seldom missed a Major League Baseball game. We will miss his fun social media updates and posts, phone chats about baseball statistics, endearing videos of his beloved dog, and the birthday well-wishes so many of us counted on every year. His memory will live on in the hearts of all those who loved him.

Matthew was preceded in death by his grandparents and is survived by his son and daughter in-law, Shawn and Reyna Butler, and their children Sophia and Norah; his parents, Frank and Joan Butler; and his siblings, Nate Butler and Christine Williams, along with numerous extended family members.

The Butler family intends to hold services later in the year. Details will be announced at a later date.
