Michael Allen Ray, the second son of Wilbur and Mary Anne Ray, was born on September 29,1945, in Fresno, California, and passed peacefully, surrounded by family, on July 7, 2026.

Born and raised in Fresno, Michael attended Roosevelt High School before graduating with honors from California State University, Fresno, where he earned a master's degree in chemistry and mathematics. He devoted more than 55 years to the field of chemistry, beginning his career as a wine chemist before becoming Director of APPL, Inc. Even after retirement, Michael's passion for science and education continued. He began a new chapter as a beloved lecturer at Fresno State University, where he inspired students with his knowledge, humility, and lifelong love of learning.

Michael and his beloved wife, Joyce, were faithful servants of Christ throughout their marriage. They were married in April 1973 at Easterby-Knox Presbyterian Church and later became devoted members of Trinity Presbyterian Church. Michael faithfully served as a Ruling Elder for many years and joyfully lifted his voice in the men's choir. His quiet acts of service and commitment to his church and community reflected the depth of his faith and his desire to help others.

Michael was preceded in death by his parents, Wilbur and Mary Anne Ray; his older brother, Van Ray; his father-in-law, Harry Gillingwater; and his brother-in-law, William Gillingwater.

He is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Joyce Ray; his two younger sisters, Lynn and Robin Ray; and his three beloved children: his eldest son, Steven Ray and his wife, Julie; his daughter, Courtney Ray and her husband, J.T. Parnell; and his youngest daughter, Lauren Ray and her husband, Jacob Ballew. 

Michael was a cherished grandfather to Kimberly Lambert, Bethany Ray, Matthew Ray, Nathan Ray, and Jasper Ballew, and a proud great-grandfather to Kaya Leal. Nothing brought him greater joy than spending time with his family and watching future generations grow.

Michael will forever be remembered for his quiet, reliable strength, keen intellect, gentle spirit, and good-natured humor. He loved with unwavering gentleness and remained steadfastly devoted to his treasured family, faithful friends, his church, his students, and his community. His life touched countless people, and his legacy will continue in the hearts of all who knew him.

At Michael's humble request, the greatest remembrance of his life will be the memories held in the hearts of his loved ones and the many friends, colleagues, and students whose lives he enriched.

Though we grieve his absence, we rejoice in the promise of eternal life. We are comforted in knowing that Michael has been made perfect and whole in the glory of Heaven. Until we meet again, we will carry him in our hearts and prayers, grateful for the remarkable life he lived and the enduring example of faith, love, and service he leaves behind.
