Obituary

Paula Sue Harris, cherished mother, aunt, cousin, friend, mental health professional, and skilled horse race handicapper has died.
She passed away in comfort and peace on November 2, 2023 at the age of 79.

Paula was born on September 2, 1944, in Fresno, California. At age five, her parents relocated to Detroit, Michigan. She was fond of telling people she grew up on 8-Mile – long before it became famous in a song. Growing up, Paula spent summers in Kentucky, visiting grandparents and extended family, It was there that she first developed her love of horses and horse racing. Paula credited her time there as the best part of her childhood. After high school Paula returned to California. She attended Fresno City College and Fresno State University earning both a Bachelor's and Master's degree in Social Work. During her 50-year career she served at Fresno County Department of Child and Family Services, Kings County Behavioral Health, Poverello House, Nancy Hinds Hospice, and eventually began a private practice that she maintained up until the time of her death. She spoke often of her gratitude for having found her life's work - the ability to help people navigate the complexities of life. Paula's clients were incredibly important to her. She said she couldn't imagine ever fully retiring from the work God created her to do. Among her most enjoyable pastimes was traveling with her family to beach towns across the country. She was proud to have attended all three races of the Triple Crown with her very best friend, Violet Mesple. The absolute loves of her life were her children and family. Her favorite way to spend time was with them, wherever they were, whatever they were doing. Paula is preceded in death by her parents, William and Ruth Harris, and her beloved brother and sister-in-law, Allen and Joy Harris. She is survived by her daughters Polly Bispo and Abby Bispo, Anthony Bispo, Michael Bispo (LaDonna), their children Mikala Reed (Cody) and Cody Bispo (Shelby), her nieces Kathryn Palmer (Nick) Jennifer Harris, and nephew Eric Harris (Nicole), their families, and Benny the angel dog. Paula's spectacular smile, contagious laugh, quick wit, and unwavering faith in God will be remembered always. She is adored beyond measure by anyone fortunate to be in her orbit. Rest well, our Suzie girl. You are so loved.

Remembrances may be made to Nancy Hinds Hospice, 2490 W. Shaw Ave, Ste 101, Fresno CA 93711
